Course code: LLAW6055 / JDOC6055
Course name: Law of International Finance
Programme offered under: LLM Programme / JD Programme
Semester: Second
Prerequisite / Co-requisite: No
Credit point value: 9 credits / 6 credits

1.2 Course description

This course focusses on the law and practice of international finance. The course will cover the fundamental concepts in international finance and the interaction of national and transnational law.

Unlike the course in semester 1 on International Corporate Finance, this semester 2 course is not focussed on fundraising by corporates and the legal issues in connection therewith. Instead, this course is designed to cover more macro issues and demonstrate how the law facilitates and governs advanced finance transactions in the world economy. Topics such as syndicated lending, project finance, structured finance and hedging transactions will be covered.

You may choose to attend this course even if you have not attended the semester 1 course on International Corporate Finance, as this is a standalone module.

Throughout the course, there will be practical role play exercises to simulate real world situations including counterparty negotiation and presentations. There will be an emphasis on application of theory and concepts to practical situations and specific fact patterns in a professional context.  The course will also highlight current trends and future challenges given the evolving nature of international finance.

By the end of this course, students will develop essential skills that are required in international finance and international finance law careers, including issue identification, negotiation, commercial reasoning, the application of relevant laws, risk assessment and risk mitigation.
